Join the National Association of Student Midwives (NASM)

Welcome to the National Association of Student Midwives (NASM), the emerging voice for student midwives in the United States. Though we’re just starting out, we are dedicated to creating a community that supports your growth, education, and future as a midwifery professional. NASM is committed to being a collective advocate for students, amplifying your concerns, and providing access to resources that strengthen the midwifery profession.

Our Mission

NASM exists to ensure that student midwives have a platform to address challenges, share opportunities, and contribute to the development of midwifery education and practice. Inspired by the goals of organizations like the National Association of Certified Professional Midwives (NACPM), we aim to foster a powerful collective voice for student midwives and advocate for the values of midwifery care in public policy, education, and beyond.

What We’re Working On

While we’re in our early stages, exciting initiatives are already in motion:

  • Student Advocacy: We’re building a network of student representatives who will act as liaisons between their schools and NASM. These liaisons will serve as a bridge to professional organizations, ensuring student voices are heard in policy discussions.

  • Resources for Professional Growth: Our plans include offering continuing education webinars, mentorship opportunities, and guidance to navigate the path from student to practicing midwife.

  • Community Building: We are creating a space where student midwives can connect, collaborate, and support one another through the challenges and triumphs of midwifery education.

Opportunities to Get Involved

Are you interested in representing your program and advocating for student midwives? Become a liaison between NASM and your academic institution. As a liaison, you will:

  • Share NASM updates and resources with your peers.

  • Communicate student concerns and priorities to NASM leadership.

  • Help shape the future of midwifery education by contributing to NASM’s Annual Student Report.

  • Connect students to local Affiliate opportunities and resources.

The term for student liaisons runs from annual meeting to annual meeting, with onboarding for the new cohort starting each summer.

Membership Benefits

Joining NASM connects you to a supportive community and valuable resources, including:

  • Access to webinars and continuing education events.

  • Networking opportunities with midwifery professionals and organizations.

  • Discounts on professional liability insurance and midwifery journals.

  • A free subscription to Midwifery Matters.

  • National visibility for your student group or program through our directory.

Looking Ahead

As we grow, we’re excited to expand our offerings, strengthen our advocacy efforts, and provide more opportunities for professional development. Together, we’ll build a secure foundation for student midwives to thrive and contribute to the future of midwifery care.

Where are you located?

  • US Based Students

Are you passionate about supporting families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum? Becoming a midwife could be your calling! In the U.S., students can choose pathways to become Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs), Certified Midwives (CMs), or Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs), each with unique educational and clinical training requirements. Midwifery offers the opportunity to provide holistic, evidence-based care to families in diverse settings, from hospitals to homes.

Explore accredited programs, learn about certification exams, and consider how midwifery aligns with your goals to make a difference in maternal and newborn health.

  • International Students

Are you an international student or someone who has already completed a midwifery or healthcare degree abroad? You may still be eligible to pursue a midwifery career in the U.S. by building on your existing qualifications. Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM), Certified Midwife (CM), or Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) pathways can offer opportunities to continue your education, gain U.S. certification, and meet state licensure requirements.

Accredited midwifery programs in the U.S. often consider prior education and clinical experience, and some schools offer bridge programs tailored for international students or credentialed professionals.

Midwives give women back the power to birth their babies their way—confident, supported, and informed.
