Student Midwives Are Stronger Together
While there are approximately 17,000 midwives and student midwives in the U.S., including those not in clinical practice, leaving a gap of at least 7000 midwives to meet the World Health Organization’s recommendation of 6 midwives per 1,000 live births. Even achieving this standard would result in a smaller midwifery workforce than other high-income countries with superior maternal and infant health outcomes.
Given that midwifery care is associated with reduced rates of preterm births, unnecessary cesareans, and maternal mortality, particularly in underserved communities.
By uniting student midwives, educators, and professionals under one collective voice, the midwifery community can drive advocacy, expand access to education and training, and push for systemic changes to bridge the workforce gap.
There are roughly 17,000 midwives and student midwives in the United States
With the U.S. recording over 3.7 million live births annually, the urgency of training and integrating more midwives into the healthcare system is higher than ever…
